There is much to consider when preparing for survival in the event of a national, natural or man-made disaster.
The first thing to consider is the ability to build a survival structure with materials that may be lying around your home – inside and outside, or you may need to purchase them. They do not have to be the best, just something to keep out the elements of weather. Perhaps a good heavy tent would suffice; if you plan to use a tent, make sure it is large enough for your family. Matches and wood scraps for a fire to cook with or for warmth will be helpful. You will also need a warm blanket for each person and something to be used as a pillow.
Food is an important necessity and you might consider military rations, freeze dried, dehydrated and other types of food that are preserved against spoilage. You will need equipment to preserve food and the best and most economical way to do that is to use a dehydrator. Dehydration is probably the oldest method used to preserve different foods. Back through the ages, primitive people dried herbs, berries, roots and even meats by leaving them sit in the sun. Dehydrated food retains much of its nutritional value and has an extremely long shelf-life. In early times, the Chinese dried tea leaves in the sun.
Scientists found a variety of dehydrated foods recently when an Egyptian tomb was opened. One of the foods was wheat grain and some of these grains were re-hydrated as an experiment. These grains sprouted, which has proven that dehydration is actually a long-term, natural process in the preservation of food. Get a dehydrator now and start working on this as you strive for survival preparedness. Using a dehydrator is not very difficult, but getting one and starting your provisions for survival preparedness is a great beginning and you will also be showing some survival skills.
With the economy worsening almost daily, many people are becoming worried as to what they should be doing to prepare for a natural or man-made disaster and realizing they might not have time to prepare for their families’ special needs if a disaster occurs. Different family members may have doctor-prescribed medications critical to their health and well-being. Others may need a special diet, such as a diabetic or those with other chronic diseases. Make sure there is an ample supply of medications and specific foods for each situation. This is when survival preparedness comes in and begins.
An emergency kit is a highly important item for your survival preparedness and a medical emergency kit seems to be most likely needed. You may want to plan for injuries or common illnesses such as severe colds, headaches, upset stomach and diarrhea. You can purchase a ready-made kit, or make your own. If you make your own disaster medical emergency kit, you will have a better idea of what you may need for your family.
A good LED flashlight or lantern, or both, should be one of the high priority possessions you may need in your survival preparedness collection of necessities if there is no electricity in your area or where you may have to go. Also, you may need some night light to help you see to set up your shelter in case your house is gone or demolished.
If you should find there are no stores or any source of basic food items such as flour, baking powder and others, you will need a hand grain mill. These smaller mills are easy to operate, and you can make strictly fine flour or rough-hewn grains for cereals. You can also grind flax, herbs, spices, soy beans, legumes and fresh coffee.
There is a wonderful way of purchasing long-lasting seeds to grow in your own garden. These seeds can be grown and harvested from your garden year after year. Now, at this time of uncertainty in our world, the best way to claim self sufficiency is through home gardening. Knowing where to access non-hybrid seeds will give us the opportunity to replant the next year and replenish our own gardens which is necessary for self reliance.
If these seeds are kept in storage sensibly and responsibly, they should yield up to 15 years. They will keep best stored in a tightly-sealed container in a cool area such as a refrigerator.
A purchased container of most of these seeds will cover an acre of garden. Most purchased seeds contain planting and harvesting directions. You can get a whole garden containing all main vegetables and herbs.
